Geomorphology

Geomorphology

Management and restoration of natural systems begins with a fundamental understanding of site specific function at the watershed-scale, geomorphic principles are at the core of our assessments. Applying geomorphic principles aids us in understanding the mechanisms of watershed function, health, streamflow and sediment transport.

Balance geologists and geomorphologists have direct experience in these areas resulting from thousands of hours of direct collection of field data, geomorphic mapping, and quantitative evaluations throughout California, Oregon, and Alaska. Applications of geomorphic analysis include:

  • Sediment source inventories and sediment budget determinations
  • Sediment transport rates
  • Watershed assessments
  • Stream, wetland, and floodplain restoration
  • Channel stability
  • Landscape response to episodic disturbances
  • Hydraulic geometry of channels, ponds, wetlands, mountain meadows, and lagoons
  • Streamwood use in stream restoration
  • Dam removal analysis
  • Peak flows
  • Low flows
  • Pre and Post-Fire analysis
